Piston problems

The piston in the picture looks like it's flat sided, thats no good, wrinkles in the tape a big nono. A piston with slight drag and eq hole works best. Build a good bumper system, and use Oak if you can get it.

If you could use o-rings, your problems would be solved.
Either that, or build a new piston, or else just try to re-apply tape, and this time the tape has to be perfectly smooth.

i heard 3/4inch endcaps work for 1.5 inch pistons

I can use O-Rings(lathe+assorted large o ring set) I just don't have any wood dowels over 1"

if you have a lathe why don't you turn down a bigger piece of wood?

Order a nylon rod or something and machine out that perfect piston!
