So in your educated opinion, putting a better pilot on should fix my problem?

It's the first thing i'd try but it could be the piston. I ended up replacing the piston and pilot valve in my first piston gun to get it woring 100%.

I had assumed the marker would work well but it didnt work. This piston is VERY tight but i can move it. Its not the best choice seeing as how it is not completely square and the little hole in the side could cause a problem. It works for now though.

Try to spray some lithium grease or similar lube in your piston housing.

Ive greased my piston in vaseline several times. I believe Crowley is right about the pilot valve.
