So I've been looking into building a fridge compressor. I found a fridge on craigslist but I'm having a hell of a time finding a place that takes the freon. I know it's and epic no-no to just let it out and I know a bunch of you have built these. How did you guys deal with this?
A nice little fact: It is illegal to purchase a fridge/freezer compressor unit in the state of Washington but you can get the freon removed from your fridge for $50

ya, same here. I was told that it ran, but nolonger cooled, so the freon must be gone. I am a major Eco-hippy mind you, and so I was extra careful about not just getting any old fridge, but when I cut the line, out came lots of freon );

Let me give you a hint- When you get one, just set it outside of your garage and cut open a line. Go inside and come back in 5 minutes and voila- Its all gone
Plus, how are they going to PROVE that there was freon in there???

Well, it really isn't good practice to let freon out into the air...but if there's absolutely noone to take it....

Appliance repair, and a/c repair places are equipped to properly drain the refrigerant.
It is a major fine if you are caught venting this stuff. (like $10 000
)
Peace of mind was worth the $25 it cost me.

Dude, it's freon from a little fridge compressor, one person even making a lifetime habit of sending bad stuff into the environment won't even make a fraction of a difference, you know how huge the ozone is? just let it out man for goodness sake, the whole world is going down the craphole soon enough anyways...

ok now that is not my attitude. I'm just saying spending $50 to get the gas out of a old fridge that I got for free to build a project that might not last, well it just doesn't seem right.sv490665 wrote:Dude, it's freon from a little fridge compressor, one person even making a lifetime habit of sending bad stuff into the environment won't even make a fraction of a difference, you know how huge he ozone is? just let it out man for goodness sake, the whole world is going down the craphole soon enough anyways...
does anyone know of any government subsidized program or something that sucks this stuff for cheap?

Well it's a damn good thing you live in America then, where the Ozone layer hardly effects you.sv490665 wrote:Dude, it's freon from a little fridge compressor, one person even making a lifetime habit of sending bad stuff into the environment won't even make a fraction of a difference, you know how huge he ozone is? just let it out man for goodness sake, the whole world is going down the craphole soon enough anyways...
Because people like you, tell other people to not give a crap about the ozone layer, I have a higher chance of getting skin cancer because of the increased level of UVR NZ receives compared to Northern Hemisphere countries.
Not only what you are discussing is illegal in most countries, it is also irresponsible, immature and thoughtless. I don't care if it saves you $50. I'm sure you would feel the same if the country you live in, that has some of the lowest green house emissions in the world, is stuck with the consequences of every other nation.Overall, peak UVR levels in the New Zealand summer, as measured by the Ultraviolet Index (UVI), are about 40% more than at corresponding latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. There has also been a 10% decrease in ozone over New Zealand since the 1970s
sorry crowley didn't mean to be offensive to anyone, but you gotta agree, when you take a look at the whole world around us, it definitely is going down the craphole very soon, there are so many variables that are out of anyone's control that the environment is going down just as fast as man's ability to govern others. This world's jacked man. Way jacked. Anyways... homedepot are you really insistent on using a fridge compressor? Maybe it would be just a little bit more money and you could just get a regular compressor.
