I haven't been on here for a while because of school and stuff, but during the break I am planning on making another cannon. i found a website that has links to building materials and valves. http://www.globalspec.com/ using that I found a site that sells piston actuated valves and i wanted to know what you guys thought. i sent them an email to see how much they cost. the website is http://www.spiraxsarco.com/us/products- ... valves.asp

The flow rate on that valve looks pretty low; it would probably be easier and cheaper to mod a sprinkler, not to mention the better performance. However, their actuated ball valves look interesting.

what is the flow coefficient of a sprinkler valve? i thought it was about 4Cv. the 1" on there is 19.6

Cv for a sprinkler valve is typically advertised at about 11.

As a general rule of online businesses, if they don't list the price or its really hard to find the price its probably really expensive.

first of all the valve has a solenoid... plus one of its port is meant to be used with flexible tubing

so -> this might really be useful.... but not for our purposes...

you need high flow, short opening time and (preferably) high pressure rating this is what this valve doesn't have... just get a QEV - it has all you need...

so to put it short...this valve sucks!!

Had those being examined here before. I believe the theme of the thread was "I've found a valve, what the hell does it do".


They're all positive action valves in that they require a pilot valve to direct air TO the piston to open it (Solars does that) and not exhaust valves where the air is dumped FROM the piston to open it. Whether that's a good thing or not is a matter of opinion. It's a bit safer.


I wouldn't buy one unless I had someone else's budget to spend and the cannon was required to be on the paranoid side of safe and reliable. They're very far from compact and intended to be in accessible piping.

On the plus side they can be rated to quite high pressure, they are intended for steam use after all.
