This reminds me I have all the needed parts (except batteries) in my basement for an electric scooter (the frame is partially built also). That includes a 750 watt electric motor, speed controller, throttle and charger. Just waiting for it to get warmer.
Still, yours is really cool and 10 mph is well... at least you're not walking
Maybe get a sheet of plexiglass and make a windshield for it?

I would advise against stopping your cart, I messed my foot last year after trying to stop mine, my foot rolled under the cart and turned the top side of my foot to the bottom, overextending my ligaments and nearly tearing them.

You could always have a hinged friction plate/rod that you can push down instead.

Just get a three-position switch and run it as forward/off/reverse.

Yeah, you could short out the motor as a brake, just make sure the batteries aren't connected

Using your motor as a brake is a bad idea...it isn't designed for that. Get some pneumatic tires on there and configure a standard scrub tire brake as a minimum, add band, drum or disk brakes as you can afford them.
Brakes are one of the most important aspects of a cart build. Ignore them at your own peril.
