lathes . how much cost in your country

Well, your basic Chinese-made lathe can run about 400$ new, and of course a couple or more hundred more after setup, cleaning, and buying more hardware.

Well it depends on what country you are in but I am getting my self a rotwerk(german) lathe. It costs 850CHF(around 950 or so $) and is of coarse better quality then the chinese crud. It is also slightly larger ect. ect. and very accessible with ease for me(damn i am getting it this thursday, and the nylon and aluminium is coming tomorrow with luck).

Really as a recap i would say:
Chinese mini:400$
German small lathe: 950$
Larger lathe: 1000-5000$
Used small lathes from ebay: 200-900$
CNC: ALOT(sadly) i have seen a used one on ebay for 1000 once...

Really my tip(as a new lathe owner) is to really look around, i have had lots of help from spudfiles and backyardmetalcasting (the forum) and have therefore found the product perfect for me.(MRR helped me a lot too as he found the rotwerk lathe for me int he first place!)

Make sure you go at least 9x20 if you can afford it. You can can them alot cheaper used if you want to try that out. I bought my used with tooling on Craigslist.com for $100! It's a little beat up(On the ways under the chuck), but it still works great, and I could not pass up the price.

I used to have a smaller one like you have in the picture, and it was just too cramped. It really limits what you can do as far as spudding is concerned.


On my China brand 9x20, I can turn 3" stock with ease. Great for pistons.

the problem is in my country .the taxes is almost 300%

so every thing is expensive. like this mini lathe 1200$ and she cost the same one 400$ in us and europe

Also i disagree with jm, small lathes do many things just as well and are totally ok for spudguns and most small projects. Of coarse you cannot drill a barrel on a small lathe nor can you make a chair so something liek that but most average parts can be made quickly and without much trouble. And lets be honest, hwo many of us have the space for a machine(or the cash) and a small high quality lathe is alot better than a huge crapy one.

lol i have a local store that has some pretty decent medium sized lathes for about $400-$500 they look pretty solid and have made in america on them so i don't expect that they are pos although they may be

Far cry, if the spindle bearings are worn out, perhaps they could be replaced?

If I were looking for new bearings, I would look at a supplier of agricultural bearings. They may not have the correct bearings in stock, but it's a good bet that they would at least be able to order them for you.

Or perhaps the bearings could be ordered from an online source?

I have been looking at lathes also and yeah, they are not cheap. I have not looked very hard though, but still they are expensive.

and the mini lathe i have is very old but i cant tell you that she better than the new chines crap .she is russian made . here in israel is not like usa. you cant just go to places and start ask for replacment parts .they start ask you what lathe you have for want you want , what you doing with her , just asking question what you do with the lathe
