I saw an airsoft grenade on youtube that used a firecracker to propeled these bb's that were held in these holes. I looked at it... I didn't like the fact that it used a firecrackers because those are illegal in some places and hard to buy/get. so i thought of this:

Interesting thought. You could use a soda bottle, drill 5.5mm holes in it, jam BBs in and seal them up with a few drops of wax. Consensus seems to be that the fan would not be necessary.

Personally, I really don't like the idea of throwing explosive devices at people, but that's just me...

I prefer gas grenades, like the tornado grenade. If you have a lathe (like me), it should be relatively simple to make something similar to their design.

I'm not saying your design is bad, but if I were on the receiving end of a grenade like that, I would be worried about getting burnt/injured.

As cool as the Tornado design is, I would be worried if that hit me on the head :-/

I can see your concerns but I don't think that such a design could conceivable cause injury to a player wearing the appropriate protection. Still, not the sort of thing one would want to be throwing around anyway, I think it would make more sense as some sort of claymore mine :)

I like the idea of a claymore...much easier to build, and no timing device is required!

I have been trying to build a simple airsoft gas grenade for quite some time now, and it has always been the timing mechanism that has stumped me. I've tried everything from burst disks to little tiny holes, and nothing has seemed to work. Now that I have access to a full CNC machine shop at my high school, I may start working on replicating the tornado.

i've tried out one of those before, and while the concept works, the "kill radius" is terrible. it looks pretty cool, but its about as effective as filling waterballoons with bbs and air (except the grenade cant pop in your pocket)

I really don't like the whole "BB spiral" concept, just the delay mechanism.

come to think of it
you could try an extremely crude version of this below, since the heavier side flys forward and deceleration of impact makes the steel wool fly forward, the steel wool may fall forward in flight do to deceleration due to air fiction, this could be countered by having a rod in the center that impales the steel wool so there is friction holding the wool in place, of course there are other things such as foam bumpers that must be added but you get the gist

Think of DYI. What would happen if you were stopped on the street with a "hollow tube, loaded with a pre-mixed, combustible fuel, containing an ignition device, surrounded by BB's".?

Probably not the best idea...Especially in urban Southern California, where I live...

When it comes to timing devices there are a few options. A battery powered alarm clock could be used and instead of setting off an alarm it sets off a grenade or whatever you want to go off. I have also thought about coffe maker timers and microwaves but unless you had a 12 volt one the would require 120V AC, not very portable. A small battery powered countdown timer could be used to set off a grenade instead of an alarm.

Thank you. I think some people fail to anticipate what the average person might think of what they're building, and how they're using it. A combustion-powered airsoft grenade is technically feasible (delay -->thermite -->thin plastic seal -->oxygen/propane mix , or an electric delay and ignition with a spark plug), but a spectacularly bad idea for the simple reason that a good portion of the people who see it will think "OMG FIRE!!", and think no further.

I don't like the idea of airsoft grenades at all. Combustion will generate too much of the "OMG FIRE!!" response, and pneumatic grenades powerful enough to be effective would be so heavy (and hard) as to represent a blunt trauma hazard when thrown.

In games among close friends these things don't matter, but don't bother taking an airsoft grenade to a "proper" field.

That would technically be considered a terrorist device under Federal statutes, so if you're gonna try it, be careful. Cop stops you on your way to a game with one of those, and it's gonna take a lot of explaining as to why you have an anti-personnel explosive device, regardless of whether it's for airsoft or not.
