In a coaxial gun that is 12" or greater is there a need to have the barrel supported by something? Is there an optimal length to use? I am having a hard time visualizing it.

No...sorry. I have a 1/4" brakeline that is 18" long. Using 3/4" copper pipe as the chamber, is there a need to have the piston side of the barrel supported?

Depends how stiff your barrel material is, don't forget that the force is parallel to the barrel and therefore unlikely to bend it if the launcher is built correctly.

To anwer you question- a coaxail just means that the barrel is inside your chamber. To hold the barrel in the middle of the chamber i just glue on small peices of balsa.
I visit occasionally to make unrelated posts.

To keep the alignment intact and to keep it sealing and firing consistently you'll want to support the end of the barrel inside the chamber. Epoxy and nails, or if you can solder, use a couple of slices of that copper pipe
