That fiber tail is the wadding. The rifling is what spins the slug down the smooth bore of the shotgun.

I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you there, as you can see from this fired slug the fibre tail remains attached on firing, unlike wadding would.



As you can see from this lineup, all brenneke type slugs have a lightweight tail of some description to ensure they fly straight.

Hmm...10-4. So design the spudgun slug like a shotgun slug. Rifle the slug, then epoxy some sort of thick fabric material to the backside of it.

The rifling doesn't hurt, though.

Well it's not doing any harm, but for stable flight unless blessed with a rifled barrel spudders have to look elsewhere for stabilisation, such as the work carried out by Sureshot.
