Question: Stocks with thumb holes.

Im making a small barrel air rifle. I am kind of new to all of this, but i seem to have made the working parts with no issue what so ever. But i have a question about the thumbhole component of the stock.

So you guys have a reference here is what my rifle is going to look like. Note there is no thumb hole.


The questions is where does it go ?

i know its not just a hole, there some tapering of the wood around it.
What does this tapering look like?

How large is this hole meant to be?

You don't even need a full stock, you would just make a pistol grip and buttpad like this:

yeah... wow that like was my first plan.
but if you see you have a good 25 cm of wood with nothing sitting on top of it. which is why i decided to move the trigger 20 cm forward so i can save space.

I Like the way you've gone for more of a bullpup design, a lot of people don't like the look of a bullpup but when you're building a spudgun you can't afford to be picky when power is at stake and you can get a good bit extra out of those 20cm without compromising the comactness.

well i bet its one of those things which sounds harder than it is, i could probably use a few syringes some tubing and some oil.

however you cant beat a long stick in its simplicity

In this case, certainly, since your trigger is in line with the valve.

you don't need oil.. water will work just fine

but instead of choosing this method you can buy a small QEV to pilot the main valve... that's much simpler

what are QEV's used in? airsoft or something?
well here in Australia you cant really find qev's that easily, i guess i could buy one on line for $50 if it makes a huge difference....

A QEV is basically a commercially available piston valve, if you can get your hands on one it will save you a lot of fabrication.
