Behold the power of "Vacula"...

Did this while bored at work today... Used my aspirator/vacuum pump to crush a 30gal brake cleaner drum... This thing will pull 28.5" of vacuum, but this only took about 19"....

I used a scrader valve(sans core) stuck into a 2"npt to 1/2" npt bushing threaded into the large port and capped the smaller port...

Thought some of you might find it interesting...

That does suck, the air right out of the drum...

Pratical uses?

14.7 psi x a drumload of square inches, what did you expect?

Wurth FTW! :D

I'm sure JSR can think of at least one... :D

But seriously, this is the pump I use when doing testing with evacuated barrells... I've also used it to suck sealants into leaky joints in coax's(that much vacuum will pull epoxy right into a pinhole leak)...

JSR has access to pumps at work that can evacuate a 2,000 litre reactor in a matter of minutes, if he had those sort of ideas...

With this pump you could proceed with the vacuum barrel spud cannon.

Next empty drum you get, try to suck a gulf ball through a smaller hole then the ball, in the side of the drum maybe.

Take a video if you can. :D

Well... Practical use.

You could design a cannon with a "chamber" that could withstand the vacuum. A piston in the chamber, vents at the back... Here, forgive the crudeness of the drawing. A rough sketch of the idea.

Image

Basically vented at the back there, sealed where the barrel meets the "chamber" but lubricated for easy travel of the piston. Create a vacuum in the "chamber" then trigger the release of the piston. Depending on the strength of the vacuum I can imagine that piston could get moving pretty quick.

Powerful? Maybe. Efficient? Not by any means. But plausible.

Or even just the old school vacuum ping pong cannon.

You're still working with the equivalent of less than a bar so it will be difficult to extract massive performance.

Well the effectiveness is limited by the strength of the vacuum, the ease of movement of the piston, the amount of ventilation in the rear, the weight of the piston assembly...

Never said it'd be effective, just throwing it out there as a practical use for a nifty vacuum.
