I found this in reviewing some of our film. The gasses are directed behind the muzzle because of the angle of the tube running into the black tip. We chose the vertical positioning of the brake because it reduces muzzle flip. It's kind of a quasi-brake acting as a muzzle brake and a compensator.

I have circled the patch of grass behind the muzzle that is being blown down. You can really tell in the video when you advance the frame forward and backward. (I also have the exploding paint can circled)
