On a similar note, I have to say that I find American news programmes often have a script that is written and read like the news isn't exciting enough on its own and needed pepping up. This usually means lots of onomatopoeia, poetic phrasing, a sprinkling of hyperbole, then reading it at pace with excessive intonation (particularly if the word "Emergency" is used).

I don't know what Americans think of British newsreaders (probably that it sounds like they're narrating a funeral march), but I find it rather distracting on the occasions I do see US news programmes.

EDIT: And it turns out that there is only one hit on Google for the phrase "narrating a funeral march". Damn, I was hoping I could claim a first on that.

On a similar note, I have to say that I find American news programmes often have a script that is written and read like the news isn't exciting enough on its own and needed pepping up.

It's audible in other programs too, for example I much prefer the British narration to something like Mythbusters to the US version, definitely sounds less patronising and the puns are more palatable

It cannot be built heavily enough. It is likely this chamber will fail eventually.

Indeed, but I find the contrast most stark in news programmes.

What might be rendered as "An off-duty police officer was at the scene, and apprehended the gunman" on the BBC might end up as narration something like "WHAM! HE COMES OUTTA NOWHERE, KNOCKING THE PISTOL FROM THE SHOOTER'S HANDS AND TACKLING HIM TO THE FLOOR!" (all in capitals, of course) on US news.

I guess it's mostly cultural attitudes, but to me, if it's "awesome" enough news, it doesn't need to be tarted up to sound like an overexcited 14 year old's fanfictions. And if it's not, then that just makes it sound ridiculous.

I find most everything delivered by the "Electronic Box of Truth" to be annoying... with the exception of the History Channel. I prefer British narration of WWII history films as they provide a strictly factual narration without adding any undue emotion and drama.

There are some excellent CGI scenes in history channel documentaries like "Dogfights" or "Greatest Tank Battles" (most episodes can be found on youtube) which are unfortunately let down by overly dramatic narration as well as the sheer focus on American (and sometimes Israeli) military victories, no objections to what is after all a US show however being so selective it does seem more like propaganda than history.

On a completely different note, following ThornsofTime's advice in the lighter thread decided to try out some e-cigarettes from this site, they arrived today and quite enjoyable so far.
