Thought this video deserved a thread of its own since I think it's one of the coolest things I've filmed. Anyway, I decided to bring out my hybrid after four long months of inactivity to see what a 7x mix muzzle blast would do to a watermelon from about two feet away.

As you can see in the video the muzzle blast compressed one side of the melon and sent chunks flying everywhere as the water inside the melon was forced out. What I thought was cool was some sort of hydrostatic shock effect blowing the 'cap' off the top of the melon. The cap went straight up about 2' and then came down, all the other chunks went backwards or out the sides.

Enjoy

That is insane.
If you freeze frame at about 46 seconds you can see what looks like a dart forming, about to hit the target. It reminded me of the technique of an explosively formed penetrator as used in anti-armour munitions, very impressive.

I assume that such a muzzle blast would do a fairly competent job of eviscerating an incompetent operator or unfortunate bystander ?

Haha yeah I see what you mean. If you really slow the footage down and look at the frames one by one you can see the first 'shock diamond' slam in to the melon, which compresses one whole side and forces out the water, then in the next frame the second 'shock diamond' slams in and rips off the face and causes havoc :D

Has anyone ever considered a commercial use for this type of product; i.e. a "bang stick" as carried by abalone divers and other who have to deal with sharks?

When I was a lad (cough cough) we used a section of broom handle, a suitable size bit of gal pipe and a 12g buckshot shell. One heavy jab and problem solved. Would this type of "blast only" impact be feasible underwater and would the side effects be just as devastating to the user?

I think the water would diminish the effectiveness quit a bit...

The answer is here > http://www.mizozo.com/weird/05/2010/02/ ... -safe.html
(not safe for work ;-) )
The reason I used to do it was because of the guilt and anger I felt towards this bodacious treat. It would constantly tempt me and eventually break me down. I would have sex with it and get so mad that I had put my life in danger, that I wanted to kill every watermelon alive!"
:D

Mr C. I gotta admit your muzzle blast video beats the socks off mine. We knew hybrids have more kick.

@ Poland, please mark your link as NSFW. Thanks.

Thank You.

Too dangerous to shoot in my backyard. I've done a golfball vs watermelon with a pneumatic before in my backyard but I wouldn't dare do it with my hybrid haha :P
