Essentially, the force required to stop your piston is equal to the force acting on your piston as it opens times (1+piston acceleration distance/deceleration distance)

That assumes your chamber puts out a constant pressure the whole time and tends to overestimate the forces involved.

Ball park math is not too hard. In reality the forces are not a simple time vs force, but the basics is the following.

The formula F=M times A applies to getting the piston moving and bringing it to a stop.

Stopping the same piston in 1/10th the distance will require a force in the opposite direction 10 times greater or 1,000 pounds into the barely compressable bumper. This short stopping distance without a bumper tends to break things made of plastic.

How far does your piston open. How much force is applied while it is opening? How much distance does it have to slow back down?

The fun in spudding is damage pictures where the acceleration distance is several feet and the deceleration distance is a matter of inches resulting in impacts that punch holes in steel.

One way to limit the energy in a piston is to limit the distance it picks up speed. Limit the total travel to eliminate excess travel.

Edit. Found a better photo. Acceleration zone about 4 feet. deceleration zone about 1/4 inch. Acceleration force about 70 pounds average. deceleration force was much higher. Not sure what the punch through force is for a washing machine.
