What's your education situation, I assume you've finished high school? While it might be difficult if you're the only breadwinner for your young family, enrolling in some community college or technical school might be beneficial even if you can only work part time. You could end up as a machinist, making a decent pay while having access to some awesome tools for your toys
It's just a thought, considering the current economic and employment problems in America and many other Western countries, it could be extremely risky relying on working without any post-high school qualifications. I assume you would be entitled to some allowance from the government as well as a student loan of sorts if you choose to do a college degree/diploma/course.
