fit into a standing 1/2" fitting? The difference is so small that it just might work...

ya america typically uses NPT. BSPP and NPT are NOT COMPATIBLE. you will have to get an adapter- www.mcmaster.com sells them.

Well they thread together, you might need to use a bit more teflon tape than usual to get them to seal. yes... however the threads on that slide valve are BSPP, so they are parallel threads, whereas NPT are tapered. personally I'd recommend just getting the adapter, as i hate jury-rigging threaded fittings. just my 2 cents.
