@ jrrdw: That's not an unreasonable suggestion, but in my case, such things are actually fairly obnoxiously priced in limey-land. It's just not the type of thing that's in demand (at least if you want a front/back pair - there are some front bead versions out there for shotguns).

Plus, HEAL was already set up for 11mm rail mountings.

@Ragnarok, Fiber optics are found in a lot of things now days. With your build talents and if you wanted it, I'm sure you would either already have it or a plan for getting it done.

Yes, I did get accused of being involved in the JFK assassination.

The Mythbusters did, as I recall, try small airguns as a possible way of delivering poisoned pellets, but they didn't give the airguns a chance with the ice bullets. Mind you, their air cannons were seldom very impressive.

I figure something like HEAL would actually be pretty good for firing ice bullets, having the right sort of compromises on calibre and pressure to deliver a reasonably sized slug at a respectable velocity. I have no idea if you could get any accuracy out of it though. That might actually be an interesting experiment for a later date, seeing how well ice slugs can group.

I suppose you can cast proper ice bullets just as cast lead slugs for smooth bore air guns, only problem would be the expansion so the mold must be flexible (tie the pieces of the mold with rubber band instead of screw maybe?)

Well, bugger. One of the O-rings on HEAL's sleeve valve has been damaged and is now leaking like a sieve. It's very much not a user serviceable part, so I'm going to have to either buy or make a replacement for the entire valve.

However, I'm now feeling incredibly smug about all the times that people said that HEAL's barrel safety was superfluous, because I just had exactly the kind of failure it was designed to protect against (a pilot volume leak under pressure) - and, indeed, it did its job exactly as it was supposed to.

Ragnarok your emphasis on "pilot safety" has made an impact on me... now that I live with others in a house as well as have neighbours I'm going to look into something like this for any breech loaders I build. :salute:

Got a 3/8" Qev from the Ebay for a future build, $6.64 US, it is BSPT though, but I can make that work.
