Hello,
When I was a boy (I'm 63), I remember a compressed air gun that works approximately like that:
- You compress the air by sliding a tube beneath the barrel,
- You insert a projectile,
- You fire.
I'm looking for something similar to launch tennis balls to my dog.
One key point is the ability to compress the air easily (no bicycle pump, air compressor, nor flammable products)
Thanks for any suggestion

Plenty of launchers in the Pneumatic Showcase section to get build idea's from. How do you feel about using a paintball air supply tank for launching tennis balls? How far do you plan to launch them? You could use a spring powered launcher but that wouldn't have the power a pneumatic does.

Here's the section with the topics you probably want to look through: viewforum.php?f=26

Hi,
thanks for your answer.
I browse a bit the pneumatic cannons forum. It seems that many designs (all ?) are build using highly compressed air, and vavles. I was looking for something less powerfull: I need to reach about 30 or 40 meters.
I will browse the forum again :-)

How does your dog aim it?

Come on man. That's not what he meant and you know it. He said "tennis ball gun for my dog", so clearly what he's looking for is a gun made out of tennis balls that he will launch his dog from.

ha ha :)
So I actually looked around for this device but could not find anything that matched the description. Just thinking we would need a long stroke to compress enough air in a single stroke to launch a ball any decent distance. Increasing the bore will make it hard to charge. Big valve too.

Or is it like a pneumatic speargun with a gas spring inside?

Rubber bands might be better.

Anybody remember what the automatic tennis ball launcher was called? The dog could play fetch any time it wanted to. The guys dog would drop the ball in and off it went. It was a fairly small spring loaded device and IIRC it held 3 balls. One ball had to be dropped in to acuate it.

I would be tempted to just buy one, I have made one but it needs compressed air.
