I drafted this up to shoot 3/4" potato plugs. It's different than anything I've built before, so I'd appreciate any feedback anyone can give before I commit materials.

You only need an equalization hole if your piston seals PERFECTLY along the sides. That means that you have applied orings in the proper way.
