what is a Vogt pattern spudgun?

how does a piston valve work and how do i make/get one? (diagrams would be helpful)

and i dont understand the piston valve page on spudwiki

What did you find confusing about the piston-valve artical?

(I appologize to brumby for hindering his learing procces - but I'd like to improve the wiki artical... and I can't do that too well if I don't know what is wrong with it)
