what does the fan do

The fan in Combustion chamber helps mix the air and fuel around... a better mix=better ignition. It's not required... but nice and handy.

They also help vent the gasses after fireing the cannon. They are realy worht the extra cost, espetialy if you can find a used one cheap at a pc shop, or even garage sells.
