You'll outgrow a Sherline in 10 minutes. Gippeto is right.....buy a real lathe, not a toy.

1" through the spindle is IMHO a minimum.
Agree, wish I knew it when I made my purchase (Even though I didn't have the money for one such size anyway  )
I'd buy a second hand one if I could, save lots and these things lasts decades if not more.

Emco makes good machines, I use one when I'm making small stuff.

Started a class this semester where we design and build a robot from scratch. They are currently teaching us how to use the lathes and mills... we have 4 14" lathes and 4 huge mills, all precise to ten-thousandths of an inch. We also have CNC lathes and Mills, one being a Haas... its like heaven in there. If I make anything cool I will post it, since it's my first time actually using machine tools :D

Nice.
Talking about CNC, I ordered a CNC router with custom specs (hoping to have it in my hands within a week or so).
Working space: Y- 660 X-458 Z- 215 and a 50mm chuck 4th axis.
Milling head with 10mm collects so it can share milling bits with my mill.
I know it looks thin but these are 6mm laser cut iron plates welded. Pretty steady, already checked myself :P

Dunno where should I put it but this is so far the most well done home made rifling attempt I have came across.

oi!

... but yeah, if you have aspirations beyond pen guns and cutting non-standard threads without going insane, go for something bigger.

Little aluminum motor bracket I cooked up in the lab a while back. I guess this is my first machined part :D

When I first saw the title I thought it was CNC machining, when I saw the rest of the video I dropped my jaw and when I saw the final result I almost got tears in my eyes.

Ha ha, wow. I've seen cubes made in a lathe before, but never anything like this, proving once again even technically we're limited by nothing but our imagination...
