The front is the sealing or barrel side. The washer should fit inside your barrel.

I'll leave off the nuts. The washers are in red.

I've said that a few times as well.

I could effectively halve the mass of the pistons I currently use and see no discernible performance improvement. I'd struggle to spot the difference if I had a chrony to be frank. However my pistons aren't exactly hugely heavy in the first place.

Doesn't mean that heavy pistons should be ignored though. It's still a good idea to keep the weight down as much as possible.

Piston weight may not affect opening time... but a heavier piston has more momentum... so keeping weight to a minimum is generally a good idea to reduce the chance of damage to a cannon, especially PVC ones.
