Think outside the box,do you actually need a glue gun to use the glue sticks?Hell no,get yourself a baked bean can (empty) chop up some glue stick and hold it over a candle, use pliers it will get hot

.
Depending on size of your Tee housed piston you want to build, use your imagination.Coke bottle lids, buttons glued together etc.Use your brain not your wallet.

End caps sometimes fit flush inside a coupler so you could try that.

A short picture tutorial is below.
Technician i'm interested in how you connected the HDPE to the drill press if the hole didn't go all the way through the piston?

He tapped a hole and threaded in a bolt which had the head cut off.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a bolt piston.
Buy a 1/4'' bolt, slip some 2'' washers on it, find some rubber, and a few nuts and your in business.
Ive, done it. It works better than no piston at all.

I made a hole just a little smaller than the bolt and force screwed in the bolt and cut off the head. Then I chucked the bolt into the drill press. The hole in the piston goes just past 1/2 way through. The bolt tapped its way in. No tap needed.
