My friend used to have instructions on how to make IR flares which would illuminate an entire city block when fired into the air...

Still have the instructions? That would be pretty cool to fire a flare into the air and have it light up a large area (especially if only you can see it).

Edit: I guess you could try wiring up 20 IR LEDs and a 555 Timer to give it a delay.
