Actually, im going with a 2 inch diameter for the barrel. im firing shells not paintball.
I was talking about your chamber. If your chamber is going to be a 1" diameter by 3" long steel pipe, you may want to go with a 1" metal valve.
From my understanding, he is making the chamber out of 2" pipe and 3" long + some extra space from the valve and cap. As for drilling a hole, it should not be that hard once you get a indentation to guide the bit. A 2" ball valve is rather large and will be expensive, a 1" is around $20, 2" is around $38, and a 2.5" is around $50 over here.
The main benifit to using the 2" valve is: less air restriction (depending on fast valve is opened), dumping the pressure all at once instead of funneling the pressure, with a few simple modifications (remove end cap with fill valve and with adaptors turn pipe size to 1/4" for another metal ball valve (chamber fill valve does not need to be big and the smaller the cheaper) , and after the little metal ball valve, reduce to 1/8", add a paintball tank adaptor and a Co2 tank) it could operate on unregulated Co2 and fire almost as fast as you can load (time for charging chamber and firing), and theres a large handle for easy opening.
With the chamber and valve being metal, you can pump it to high pressure without problems (around 800PSI, about that of Co2).
There are some detriments to using the 2" valve: These things are heavy, since your making it all out of 2" galvanized pipe (excluding the barrel assembly (it is my understanding that this is the size your using)) it is going to be heavy and somwhat expensive to build, and you will need alot more Teflon tape.
Being built to be charge with a tire pump or air pump, I would expect the cost of materials to be around $60 with the valve being over half that.
A 2" barrel is a good size, if your going to fire paintball grenades or buck shot paintballs I would recommend making a few seals to sit behind the projectiles for a better air seal.
From experiance I have found that these are easy to make, inexpensive, and provide an excellent seal.
Materials:
1. Cheap dollar store foam noodle that fits loosly in the barrel (pool toys)
2. Insulating foam (thin and flexible, used in construction to separate the foundation from the pressure treated wood, about $4 for a roll)
3. Scissors to cut the noodle and insulating foam
4. Hot glue gun and glue sticks
5. A marker that will show against the insulating foam
6. I think thats it.
1. Cut noodle in 2" lengths (if 2" then it cannot turn sidways in barrel)
2. Trace the outside of the barrel onto the insulating foam and cut out
3. Glue the piece of noodle and foam disk cutout, center as best as possible
4. Let glue harden
5. Slide seal in barrel, it should fit nicely inside with foam disk edges pressed against barrel walls
These are cheap and easy to make, light and easy to carry, and easy to retrieve since they only go a few feet after leaving the barrel.

wow, i can get a 2" ball valve for like $3 over here:/
You got to be kidding me!!! You can really get a 2" metal ball valve for around $3. If that's true, that is amazing.

im sorry, its actually $12 for a brass ball valve. Its a 1'' BTW. I had to modify my design cause my home depot dosent have any galvalized pipe over 2". Not thick enough. So if I buy a 1" wide by 3" length Gal. Pipe, it that work? I decided that i will run it off co2. maybe a 9 oz bottle for paintabll...
I would Have a remote off the co2 going into teh launcher. The only problem now is what connection to use between the remote and the launcher. I ll post pics later of what I have.
