I'm surprised the stainless tip nearly made it through, impressive! It would be interesting to have a composite round, ie drilling a 6mm cavity in the steel tip and inserting a tungsten core.

See the attached diagram, the tungsten will back the steel with something hard and dense, and at the same time the steel will make the tungsten less likely to shatter by absorbing some of the impact shock, like a capped shell which we discussed some pages ago.

I don't think that would make a difference. The reason it didn't penetrate is, apart from the hardness, becayse compared to the tungsten, it has a low sectional density.

For the tungsten rod it is 71g/cm², if you had to make the same rod out of steel it would be about 39g/cm².

A tungsten insert would increase this considerably, making it more likely to penetrate.
