plus i stated i used the design i originally posted which was a baffle stack and the in the movie picture is a baffle insert. 8)

then if what you're saying is true, then a silencer of the same type would not be effective on a pneumatic right?
Willing to put that to the test?

a silencer on a pneumatic doesn't have to deal with the heat from combustion, so therefore more space can be dedicated to gas expansion instead of a heat exchanger like steel wool.
so different types of silencer would be better for different types of cannon.

It would show a considerably lower attenuation than if used on a combustion.
Doesn't mean that it would be entirely useless. The natural volume of such a silencer would have some effect, and the turbulence caused by flow through the wool would also count for something.

The real issue is, how can we prove that it is heat transfer or gas expansion. Short and simple, i dont know, and dont really care.
If you think its the heat transfer, thats fine. but I know that I have gotten ahead of myself, seeing as I dont even make combustion guns.
So I'm ending this now. I dont care anymore. Count me out of this.

ok so the reason that guns make a lound bang is because of the high pressure, high speed gases leaving the barrel, lower pressure=less noise.
as gas heats up, it expands... so no prizes for guessing what happens when a gas is cooled....
gas also, cools when it de-pressurized, that's why you get a cool vapour out of the muzzle of a pneumatic...
so these effects both work in a combustion silencer to reduce the pressure and speed of the gases leaving the barrel.
with a pneumatic, you can only slow the gas and allow it to expand to reduce the pressure...
this is why two different types of silencer are needed.

I've heard that silencers can really reduce the power of a gun. But I've also heard that temperature of gases can come into play. Has anyone ever noticed a real difference in performance levels with and without silencers?

i havent with any pistols but when i stretched my .223 out to 300yards (sighted at 150) then put a suppressor on it i noticed a huge different from about 3 inch grouping to just a tick under 8 inch. on my air airguns i haven't noticed any thing

Common misunderstanding. Several firearm suppressors have a "wipe", an addition that's brings rounds that are mildly supersonic back into the transonic range to reduce the sonic shockwave on them and make them quieter.
So some suppressors do reduce power, but they're designed to. A lot of people therefore make the mistaken assumption that all suppressors reduce performance, which is untrue - some improve it, but it depends on how close your barrel is to it's optimum length.

this is true, good point silencers are like eye glasses if you dont have the right ones they are rendered useless.

O okay thanks. I just found my old silencer I made. It was made for a one inch barrel. I fired it and it just broke.

I guess there must have been a crack in it.

I should post my silencer
For spuddys, The best way to do it is find the volume of your ENTIRE CANNON, then add 1 or 2 for safe measure, and use that as the volume of your supressor. Then fill it with some sort of sound-supressing foam. The best, Ive found for this, Is the foam they give you on the tops of the harry and david pears.
Anyway, My silencer, (tailored for JANET) can allow me to fire JANET IN THE HOUSE at 145 PSI and not wake my parents upstairs sleeping........ Its VERY effective.
If i fire my .177 stick gun through it at 400 PSI, Its literally a "mouse fart" silencer. Its sweet.......

well you cut out/ find some discs with a hole in the middle a little larger than your ammunition size... then stick them inside your silencer with epoxy or whatever...
alternatively, you could do as shown above and not glue the baffles in and support hem with springs or whatever...
It achieves its performance using significant volume, baffles and sound absorbing material similar to J-cloth wrapped around what are effectively plastic hair curlers
and i bet they charge a lot for it too

those are wipes not baffles but i just needed to know howu glued it in so hank you
