Rocket cones (NO SOLID FUEL, just the nose cone)

I have a small Estes rocket from physics class last year, and I recently made the discovery that the nosecone fits perfectly in 1 1/4" PVC. Needless to say, in 48 hours time, many things will be destroyed, and damage pics will be posted. It'd be faster, but I have to work early tomorrow, I don't have the parts at home, and I'll be at work until at least 5 O'clock, so the hardware store will be closed.

I also thought of filling the hollow plastic with something heavy for penetration. If anyone has one of these model rockets, I'd suggest testing the nosecone as ammo!

Thoughts?

Sounds pretty cool. What you could to to add strength, weight and peneration potential to it is dip the nose in molten lead
I can think of 100's of ideas, but they all against forum rules, so I'll keep them to myself.

cast the nose cone in plaster (so you won't have to stop experimenting when the nose cone breaks, but fill the inside of the nose cone with modeling clay, to make the cast solid), then you can make many nose cones out of different materials like lead, wax, hell even steel, you'd just have to make the mold out of sand instead and use thermite.

Oh good idea, buy some tungston rod and then cast it in steel using the thermite/sand method, that would give you some great "penetration" haha.

I had already panned on the plaster thing, but I never really thought about filling it with metal!

Well I like the plaster cast idea, but I have one for that. Make the cast and use lead, but see if you can find a way to make hollowpoints.

EDIT: Then you should make some ballistics gel

EDIT EDIT: You could also have a sharpened rod and put it in the mould, then pour some kind of low-density foam around it maybe? That would be pretty good.

Yes, you could use a sharpened bolt/metal rod and then use polyurathane/resin/epoxy/bondo/wax/metal/poo( ) or another material to mold around the cone. Then you could drill out the back to make it lighter and more aero-efficient.

No no no, I mean low density foam. Maybe like that orange foam crap they use to seal stuff, it's called Great stuff or somethign like that. But something like that, the idea being that you can launch a lower density projectile at a higher speed, then when it strikes the target, that foam would break up and allow the sharpened (insert object) to penetrate on it's own.

Well, durability wasn't the idea... The idea was for the foam to be a sabot pretty much, then break off upon impact, while the projectile continues on it's path.

Yeah sure, I got the whole concept and idea; and I like it. I was just elaborating and giving my 2 cents. Is foam expensive?

Well, there's some binary stuff they use for boats that's about 20 bucks for enough to make two cubic feet. That's pretty pricey, but there's probably other stuff.
