Putting spud cannon up for winter....
When pvc gets cold, it get very brittle. It's best not to fire a cannon that has been out in the cold for a while. There was talk about how a guy wanted to fire it from inside his house outside, but in that case the cannon wouldn't be cold.
So yes, pvc can shatter and it's dangerous to do so.

And remember, we do have several search tools on this website.

in a nut shell... yes.
pvc become brittle under 10*C or around there so its best to keep your cannon indoors.

haha yea... the last one is mine... i only wanted to fire it from inside cuz i have so much woods surrounding my house, but i realized firing the combustion inside prolly isn't too smart, then they cued me in on just walking outside... i'd recommend that..
that's also why i'm building my all-metal hybrid so i can shoot it all winter
ditto on what MrC said also
you can just avoid the problem by building a metal gun also...

Depending on how cold it is you should be able to get atleast a few shots off outside with a pvc pnuematic till it starts to get cold and then go back in for a few to warm her back up

Copper FTW!
The great thing about copper is that you can submerge it in liquid nitrogen and it will still retain it's excellent failure characteristics - Steel will go brittle though, so if you accidentally drop your steel cannon in LN2 then you might want to let it warm up a bit before using it.
Hmm, ductility.

Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
Mmm... A liberty ship cracking up in freezing water has decided to bob to the surface of my memory.

The liberty ships failed due to improper welding techniques combined with cold water, however the steel itself did not fail.
