I noticed in another post[here I believe] that some folks were saying it was time to stopspudding for the winter??? Why is this?? Is ther some danger related to the cold weather??? PVC shattering??? PLMK< thanks, L :)

PVC becomes brittle as the temperature gets colder. The main problem is with pneumatics, who don't like to be hit when pressurized.

Combustions should be fine though.

When pvc gets cold, it get very brittle. It's best not to fire a cannon that has been out in the cold for a while. There was talk about how a guy wanted to fire it from inside his house outside, but in that case the cannon wouldn't be cold.
So yes, pvc can shatter and it's dangerous to do so.

Read the whole thread, I know in one of them we discuss the effect quite indepth.

And remember, we do have several search tools on this website.

in a nut shell... yes.

pvc become brittle under 10*C or around there so its best to keep your cannon indoors.

haha yea... the last one is mine... i only wanted to fire it from inside cuz i have so much woods surrounding my house, but i realized firing the combustion inside prolly isn't too smart, then they cued me in on just walking outside... i'd recommend that..

that's also why i'm building my all-metal hybrid so i can shoot it all winter

ditto on what MrC said also

you can just avoid the problem by building a metal gun also...

Unless, of course youre spudgun is made from copper, then youre good to go all year round.

Hmmm....
Looks like I'm at it all winter...
Full metal construct... Oh yeah....

Not that it gets cold where i'm, at...

Depending on how cold it is you should be able to get atleast a few shots off outside with a pvc pnuematic till it starts to get cold and then go back in for a few to warm her back up

What if you would give your cannon a giant woolen sleeve to keep it warm? :D
Ask your grandma to make one for you :)

Copper FTW!

The great thing about copper is that you can submerge it in liquid nitrogen and it will still retain it's excellent failure characteristics - Steel will go brittle though, so if you accidentally drop your steel cannon in LN2 then you might want to let it warm up a bit before using it.

Hmm, ductility.

Mmm... A liberty ship cracking up in freezing water has decided to bob to the surface of my memory.

The liberty ships failed due to improper welding techniques combined with cold water, however the steel itself did not fail.
