method of venting the pilot....

Cannons powered by pneumatic pressure (compressed gas) using a valve or other release.

so guys, I have this gun
<a href="http://s117.photobucket.com/albums/o75/ ... CF2851.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o75/ ... CF2851.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

...and it seams to me that the thing has a touch more power when I just use the ball valve to exaust the pilot rather than the blow gun (that is fully modified).
Besides the fact that the higher the pressure in the gun, the harder the blowgun is to trigger, which is terrible if I ever wanted to be accurate. I would like a nice easy trigger pull.
So what do you guys think of my ditching the blow gun part, and making a trigger assembly/ sear and spring assembly for the ball valve? I kinda don't want all that equipment on there, but I like POWER.
Do you think there is a possibility that the only reason I can even notice a difference is that my piston needs to seal better?

just looking for some opinions or whatever....Lock

The reason the ball valve is more powerful because it vents the pilot volume faster. If your piston has tight tolerances and possibly o-rings, with low pilot volume you could use a blow gun effectively.

Hmm first i've heard of the problem with the blow gun, usually they're easy to trigger even at high pressure.

I remember JSR made a nice trigger steup for a blow gun which could be used on a ball valve, hopefully he will link it if he posts. It was a long pole that triggered the valve pretty much.

Oh dear, it's not just happy feet, are we including bellies in our launcher pics now  :D

Connecting the ball valve directly to the tee will certainly improve power, and a spring loaded ball valve isn't too hard top make with a bit of mechanical ingeniuity which you clearly have ;) take a look here for some inspiration :)

My method of "Venting the pilot" is to simply blame the dog.... :D

That was one idea, I also thought up a hydraulic system using two syringes that would give you the advantage of using a flexible hose, so your trigger would not have to be inline with your valve:

JR?... why do you think I shot an m&m through plywood?

Yikes I didn't notice that...ROFL

JSR, accually funny enough I seen that spring ball valve site before I found spudfiles a few weeks ago. It was part of my interest growing in "pointlessly shooting objects at ridiculous speed" again. By the way your screen name is from fight club right?... AWESOME movie.

and I'm out, Lock

Nothing personal, it's just part of my campaign to get people to take the trouble to crop and resize their photos before posting - the usual culprits are toes and pets but we've seen extra pairs of shoes, underwear, you name it - but bellies is a first, congratulations :D

And yes, I'm a bit of a Fight Club afficionado :)

Back on topic, I would suggest you first improve the efficiency of your system (piston tightness, pilot volume etc.) as MrCrowley suggested before going through the trouble of a spring loaded ball valve.

Crowley the reason its hard(er) to trigger for him is that the blowgun's lever been cut down to a stub.

I have an identical lever mod on my cannon and although still useable at 400psi it needs a fairly firm tug with two fingers.

Now that I think of it I'm wondering if the lever was what was meant by the "fully modified" bit :P

Nope, accually I wasn't even thinking about that little mod. It is drilled larger in two areas inside. moves a lot more air than stock.

JSR I think I will try the better seal/ lower pilot volume thing first.

And thanx Nova
