Expansion Tank

I've heard you need an expansion chamber if you want to safely use Co2 in a cannon. Is that true? Because I've seen guns with and without such chambers running on regulated Co2.

No, you do not need an expansion chamber, IF you use a regulator to reduce the pressure, OR your canon was built to handle the unregulated pressure safely.

An expansion chamber would allow a given volume of co2 (say a 12g cartridge) to expand to a lower pressure for direct use in your cannon.
