I confirm that notion
the use of a sprinkler valve as a pilot on a sprinkler valve is defiantly overkill, the valve would probably open before air would even exit the valve, my gut feeling is that -as a pilot valve- the sprinkler wouldn't utilize much of it's potential since the volume is so small, but I can assure you that it wouldn't be making the most of your money and resources.
A qev would be way better, I think even a 1/2" qev would get better results a pilot, but I'd settle with a 1/4" QEV

If you mod the blowgun, you would likely need a chrony to tell the difference between the two.
Increasing pilot size beyond a certain point doesn't seem to give any benefit.(go and play with ggdt)
With a piston valve, once piston bounce is eliminated, there is no significant increase in valve opening speed given by an increase in pilot size.
As piston valves work by the same principles as sprinkler valves (differential pressure) and you don't have the fit of the piston to complicate things, I don't think that you would be gaining anything by using a ridiculously oversized pilot valve.
My suggestion would be to mod the blowgun, and use the funds you would otherwise use on the second sprinkler valve for something else.
A modded blowgun WILL pilot a 2" piston if the design/execution is good.
