what to do with an old fire extinguisher

i bought a 9.5 liter water fire extinguisher it is still sealed
it is proof tested to 500 psi
the gauge is at 150 psi, it sais "overfilled" (90-110 is the green zone)
the sticker on it sais it was last inspected in 1988( )

so is it still safe to handle, and if so, what could i use it for?
i would like to make it into a pressure tank, but how could i refill it?

any input is greatly appreciated

First thing I would do is empty it out, screw the top off of it and inspect the inside for corrosion etc... also check the outside for deep scratches dents etc.... should be safe up to 200psi...

I've got a dry chemical tested to 585psi that i found in the woods and I think it fine it has a little dent and rust around the top but its on the part that is suporting the valve not sealing or anything because if I unscrew it the threads and valve are fine no corrosion or anything but I want to know if anyone has any ideas if its safe.

alwinovich, I think your extinguisher is sfe and probly alot safer then mine But we shall see what other say when more people reply to this topic.

best way test get LONG hose and fill it to 200 psi
leave it for an hour see wat happens
dont be standing too close to it
or pu it in a bucket cover in sand and stuff

I've got one to. Be aware they use a different thread type. I know its on here somewhere but i cant find what type it is does anyone know?

might be flared....u have to take it to the store and try out differnt fittings

Don't follow this fools advice. Always hydrotest, unless you have a suitable blast chamber. A bucket and sand is NOT a suitable blast chamber. Also the test period should be MUCH more than 1 hour.

Only if it were to fail.

Hydrotesting is best as it reduces the amount of stored energy and thus the devastation on failure.

ok! so i discharged the extinguisher and filled it to the top with water and then put 150 psi presssure on it and left it overnight
no pressure drop or leaks
since i will not use it at higher pressure then 100 psi, i would consider it safe
