After running out of potatoes I went jonesing for ammo. I looked at my empty AXE can, and realized the lid would fit perfectly in my SCH 40 2" barrel. Now, this is expensive, but it works very well if you have empty AXE cans laying around. Use the lid of an AXE Bodyspray aerosol can (taking out the nozzle mechanics, using the outer shell), and fill it 1/2 way with plumbers putty or anything similar. Epoxy would probably be great, but I don't have any on hand to test it.
If you look carefully at the shape of one of these lids, you will notice it is wider on the (more) open end, which will be used as the back. The more closed end (front) barely fits in a 2" barrel as it is, so these are very, very air tight. To be honest I was afraid something on my cannon was going to fail when I first tested it, because putty filled lid could barely be moved.
Edit:
Forgot to mention, I may post a damage pic later. The thick plywood I was using for testing with potatoes, has a hole blown straight through it. The potatoes were not able to do that with that thick of plywood, and were instead turned into potato rain.
Very air-tight, heavy 2" projectile

This is alright, but pretty expensive.
In high powered hybrids or pneumatics it could be similar to lead slugs- the end deforms out to seal the barrel under pressure.
