Look for silicone grease in a tub - it's thicker than the sprays.
Not hugely cheap, but damned impressive stuff. It's non-flammable, so it can't burn for whatever reason. Practically leak proof as well.

I use it for most things these days.

Even if your mind is in the gutter, the other lube works fine on o rings. The water based stuff won't damage latex for those building water balloon launchers. It's a little on the spendy side for air cannon use.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Y_Jelly Info is here.

Yes I have tried it. It works well, but as the article states, it tends to dry out and can be over diluted by too much water. For these reasons, plan on using it frequently if you choose to use it. Good luck explaining to your mom why you need a tube. For that you are on your own. :D

sounds like silicon grease is the way to go. i was going to ask about Vaseline but it seems everyone is trying to stay away from petroleum based lubricants. as for the ky jelly, i dont feel like this is the right application.

I've got o-rings running on aluminum and vasaline was terrible, it sticks too much before sliding.

I'm using a PTFE infused spray lube right now, but I've used White Lighting with good results. It's a wax/teflon supspension in alcohol. When the alcohol evaporates it leaves a waxy lube that sheds dirt.

If you are jacking around with wet taters, I'm with Ragnarok on the silicone lube.

I just use generic 'plumbing lube', comes in a toothpaste like tube.

I've been using vegetable oil and it seems to work fine.

I use dry PTFE/graphite, silicon, petroleum based, moly and white lithium depending on the situation.

The information in here is all quite valid.
