So I'm wondering if it's possible to replicate, or come near the sound level produced by a small exploding water bottle by making a piston setup with a large pilot. The larger the initial shock wave, the better.

Personally, I'm thinking it would take a large diameter piston, and a quick pilot.

Any thoughts if this would be possible (noise wise), and if so, how?

A barrelless large piston valve will be pretty loud even at low pressures with a decent pilot, alternatively you can keep things compact but up the pressure.

Because of the short barrel, my pistol makes my ears ring at anything above 100 psi, Although you mareswell have a small barrel on it to shoot things.
