Coaxial Piston Valve Question(SOLVED)

Hi, I'm new to spudfiles and spud guns in general. After building a successful ball valve airgun I have decided to try to build a coaxial piston valve. I have seen valves with a spring behind the piston but I have also seen ones without a spring. Could somebody please explain the pros and cons of using a spring? In what situation would I use a spring?

i am planing on making a coaxial valved cannon in the near future, and i was wondering if the shape of the piston could improve performance at all....

No need for the two semicircles, just a concave cone will increase power. However, the increase won't be realized without a chronograph.
