my question is simple as that, who came up with the piston valve ? or what is the first provable use of a piston valve on a potato gun? I'm just curious, that's all.

I do not know who invented the piston valve

However, I would infer that the creator got his idea from diaphragm valves (such as sprinkler valves and QEVs) as well as from solenoid piston valves (Asco makes some angled body ones)

Whoever it was, I would really like to shake his (or her) hand :)

Probably whoeve invented the Steam Engine, and then the piston in the Internal Combustion Engine, and so on.

The actual piston in the combustion chamber I think he means. That seals again the walls perfectaly and is super strong.

DING DING DING - Atlantis got it. The 1st piston valve was built into the steam engine, was designed like a 2 stroke, ported cylinder walls that way the piston acts as the valve. If i'm not mistaken there was a smaller piston hooked into a counter shaft placed on the same drive/fly wheel to devert the pressure for the return stroke. I think thats how it got it's start.
