I've had no end of trouble using neoprene as my primary sealer and have since discovered that many other things work far better (IMO). I'm a big fan of coupling gasket sheets and hot glue, I've had limited success with gasket quick caps, and even a little use out silicone caulk (takes forever to set).

Any other suggestions?

I have left over 40mil shower pan liner from building the house, which I will try for a piston face seal. No idea how it wil work though. It can be found at tile stores and should be anywhere else tile is sold (Home Depot/ Lowes/ etc).

I don't like sounding dumb/unknowlageable, but what exactly is neoprene?

It is a non-permeable rubber used in wetsuits, and some seat covers.

I find that when you need thin rubber that bike tubes work really well. I especially enjoy blowing them up by overfilling. Wahahahaha!!!!

I used what was labeled "Rubber Sink Washer". It was 3" diameter and 1/8th" thick, had to trim it down to 2" so it wouldn't drag the pipe. Seals great.
