i've shot a few different types of shotty ammo, using a small paper cup as a sabot, so far the best i've used is river rocks, really any small item can be used for a good shotgun ammo

nails , put them all in point out and see how many u can stick in a tree, shoot from a distance and wear goggles, they would prolly bounce back, wouldnt want to lose an eye

I'v tried a few different things as shotgun loads:
(1/2" diameter hemisheres - maybe 20-30) ice "cubes"; large spread, poor aerodynamics, low damage.
Rocks (5 thumb-sized); medium spread, fair aerodynamics, missed.
Flour in tissue paper (2-3 table spoons); abysmal aerodynamics, extreamly large spread, 'zero' damage.
Water (4 cups, saboted); very large spread, very poor aerodynamics, very low damage.
*note that "damage" is damage at range... I geuss I'm counting aerodynamics twice, but whatever.
*note that by "aerodynamics" I'm refering to energy loss during travel - if it's heavy and small, it's going to be a winner. A foam dart with a great Cd would lose to a steel cube by my definition.

It's 'odd' that the more projectiles, and the less massive they are, the larger the spread.

well, it makes sense, the heavier the projectile, the more force it will take them to change position. so it makes sense for them to have a tighter pattern.

I have a bucket full of tire weights. With a heave wire cutter I cut one up in several pieces ,about 8 or 10 pieces and shot this out of a one inch c annon . It worked really well. I am working on a barrell for shooting marbles ,seems they a re slightly larger than 5/8's inch . I welded a 5/8's bit to a lenght of allthread and run it through the barrel. It is still a littl tight so I put sandpaper on the allthread and I am working it down,I will report later on how it works.

get a dixie cup that fits down your barrel and use frozen peas!!!!!!!!!!! they shoot real good and they smack real loud wen they hit stuff

Frozen peas? Goodness sakes, I don't even want to think about the aerodynamics of uneven 5mm balls with a density of .9 g/cm³... dang things will probably lose half their energy in like 20 feet!

I've found it best to "sandwich" a hand full of bb's in a 3/4 inch pipe. Good range, lot's of power.

Sandwich? Does that mean put it between 2 sabots?
You really should explain you terms.
So, what type of spread do you get?

Sorry. By sandwich, I mean place the bb's between two pieces of paper towels. Since it's in a 3/4 inch barrel, it's pretty accurate although I havn't seen how far. I live in a very populated place. People around me are pretty pissy about things of that nature.
