How long do BBQ sparkers last?

Can any one tell me about how many times you can use a BBQ sparker before it stops sparking? I'm taking my cannon out of town this weekend and want to know if I should bring a spare, or maybe just put in a fresh one before I leave.

Cigarette lighters use the same piezo unit, I've never had one stop sparking, still, what's wrong with having a spare.

they theoreticly never fail. they get weak but dont fail simply because you are using it. ofcource, nothing lasts forever.

ive had the same one for about 2 years and it still works.

They might break eventually if you expose it to the combustion, or drop it, or intentionally smash it, but they're pretty durable, and I've never had one wear out either.

I've gotten over a year pretty consistently on home depot brand replacement grill igniters ($9.99). When my current one fails, I'll track down a battery-powered repeating grill igniter or a cheap taser. You might want to go that route right off the bat...

I found this site that has repeaters. They are high. You might as well buy a stun gun.

Tasers probably fail at least as often as do piezo sparkers. There have been a fair number of posts here, and at the old Spudtech forum, asking for help repairing failed stunguns.

I have seen them cooked before. coz the bloke wouldnt let the gun cool down between shots. and after a while they do stop working. I normaly get about 200 shots outa them.

Well there must be a reason that they are so often sold as spares for BBQs... as if they really wear out over time. Or, they get dirty or rust, and fail.

I would get a spare, and just keep it in the original packing and keep the receipt .. can't you return it to the store ('eeeeh, we decided to scrap the BBQ instead, so I don't need it') if not needed?

Yes they do wear out eventually. The piezo element itself should last nearly forever, it is the mechanics of the hammer that fail. The spring, hammer and escapement mechanism appears to be what fails.

ive had them die quite quickly. my tip is treat them with respect and theyll look after you.
