what about wood balls or would they splinter and crack... also is there anyother sports balls thatd fit 1.5 like maybe a field hockey ball doesnt need to be lead just really hard. also on mcmaster they dont carry lead balls larger than like 7/16s they have 1 1/2 steel balls but i dont know how strong they are compared to lead because lead is a pretty dense metal

Actually, despite the fact that steel is less dense than lead, it is stronger. Density really doesn't have much to do with it, malleability and ductility are what you're concerned with.
