Butt-fusion

K im sure someone here has heard of PVC buttfusion before. For those of you who don't know it is a method of connecting 2 peices of pvc together without the use of glue. There is a machine that basically melts both ends of the 2 pecies of pvc that are going to be joined together, then the machine presses them together, and the pvc drys. So there is no need for primer or cement, or couplings. These machines cost lots of money I hear. But my best friends dad owns a BIG, BIG, BIGGGG pool building company, and he has built HUGE pools for celebertys, and big Profeesional sports player and stuff like that. I mean each pool he makes cost around at least half a million each, usually much more. And he has a buttfusion machine. Do you guys think It would be better then using sement and primer on cannons? or worse?

I guess there is no point though becuase I dont know if you can buttfusion a fitting to pipe with a buttfusion machine. But just wanted to say.

if that worked it would be great, eliminating pvc cement and its icky odors would be wonderful. depending oh how this machine works it might be hard to maneuver the operation with some fittings. like an elbow or maybe a T. still it would be sick to have a cannon that is just one piece of plastic thats pipe and fittings all melted together into a cannon. i wish i had a friend's dad like that.

You sure it is for PVC? Usually those plastic welding machines are for polyethylene pipe, which would be a great material for cannons, but you would probably be limited to designs that aren't very compact or intricate.

yellow plastic gas pipe is all I've used or seen them used on.
pretty small go no-go heat range.
they're dying out with the use of o-ringed fittings

I thought this was some sick type of cannon design that used farts in a fusion reactor for power or something. I'm dissapointed...
Melting joints together sounds great though! That'd get rid of fumes from primer and cement, and could possibly be stronger. However, I'm not sure how heat effects PVC, so I wouldn't try it unless you can find evidence that PVC's strength isn't effected by heat.

What exactly is wrong with just sticking to the old fasioned way of using primer and cement?


Would the "butt-fusion" process even make the joints pressure rated? (Not just water pressure rated like would be needed in a pool though.)
