Modding a Sprinkler Valve for "Electric" Use

I've used sprinkler valves before but all of them have been modded. I have recently wanted to use electronics in a valve but just couldn't bare myself to rid the launcher of the performance gains. So, after seeing Eddbot's pneumatic, I got to thinking:

What if one was to remove the solenoid and tap into the top of the valve, then put the solenoid into the tapped hole? Like I said, I've never used a solenoid to pilot a sprinkler valve and was wondering what, if any, type of performance will this produce.

The solenoid that comes with the valve would not be adequate to hold back the pressure of the larger vent hole that (reasonably) increased performance requires. You could use a smaller solenoid valve to actuate the valve if you wanted.

the easiest solution that comes to mind would involve 2 valves. Have your main valve be modded, to be actuated by another sprinkler valve that is still controlled by the solenoid. This may involve some extra expense, but it will most definitely work

Thanks, BC. I was just wondering if it works and you should know. I knew that hooking another valve to the first would work, but I wanted to avoid the bulk.

I think I've come up with a way to make an electronic trigger, but still keep a low profile. I'll post it when I'm sure about it.

one of those Micro solenoids is my guess.....

if you get this to work cheaply i might have to hijack your idea. blowguns have too hard of a trigger pull for my liking. i like to use as little effort as possible to destroy my targets. it leaves more energy for laughing and examining carnage.

speaking of micro solenoids, where could i possibly get one? like a 1/4 inch one. Im thinking of using it on my dart rifle project.

Well, I wasn't exactly thinking of a micro solenoid but it may have its perks.

What I was looking for was an electric valve that is low profile, good efficiency, and better power than any other type of electric valve. Like I said, I am working on the design and hopefully have it posted tonight (it's night time where I'm at, and almost Thanksgiving ).
