Well in the middle of last night, I had a brilliant idea. I'm definatly sure that the one that I designed below wont work, but atleast its something to build off of. The reason for my thoughts is because I dont like the way that piston guns are normally designed. I wanted a piston with a more ergonomic look to it so I tought of this...Well, here is a crap paint diagram for you.

The theme behind it is to have the pilot valve on the bottom. The piston #2 is supposed to drop down due to the low pressure, and allowing the main piston to move back and allow the air to flow. Tell me what you guys think.

EDIT: you have to zoom in close to see piston #2's guide rod

It should work but I don't see the advantage over a normal piston.

For a pin to be holding a piston in place and have it fly back on release you'd need a very funky piston shape.

One that has a greater exposed pressurised area barrel-side than other-side.

Now that IS possible but without the other-side of the piston being vented as a pilot, the barrel-side pressure on the piston will drop on the valve opening along with the force on that side.

That means the force on the other-side of the piston will suddenly be greater, slamming it shut again, then as pressure equalises the piston will crack open, pressure and force will drop barrel-side and massive honking will ensue as the cycle continues til pressure loses the fight against friction.

Well the purpose for this is just to make the design more ergonomic. I wanted to make it more realistic looking. But now that I read Hotwired's post, I realize that what he said is true. As soon as the 2nd piston drops, The pressure from the chamber will slam the first piston back shut again...

:( Well I was just wondering what other people would think of my design. Im pretty sure somebody can modify this so that it will work. But thats up to them.

well since you thought it up why not try to build it and see if it will work? If HOTWIRE is correct and it will open and then close.

Will it be a "repeater valve" ....continuing to open and close untill the pressure is gone?

could be great for a semi-auto! :twisted:

How is the main piston going to slide back? I dont exactly get how it works.
I woul like it if you could make a diagram including the barrel, porting and a realy chamber.
