helloys, i am going into some advanced projectiles when my first penetrator round worked so well.
the only thing is that my penetrators may start to be made of titanium and as we all know that is not something you want to shoot just one time.

i am going to test something really primitive when i shoot a steel round the first coaming time. i want to shoot through 1/4" stainless plate and i am going to set LOADS of books behind the plate with a 1/2" aluminium plate in the middle book and a rock at the very back to stop them from flying back.
do you think this will save my penetrator good enough to be used again?


i am open to suggestions. (i have loads and loads of scrap steel and aluminium, from plates to huge angle irons)

depends what cannon you are shooting out of. im saying nah cause most rounds that go that fast are not going to survive...........yeah first post

Titanium won't actually make a great penetrator - it's quite strong and hard, yes, but it's not actually very dense.
Makes it great for making performance cars and expensive pushbikes, but for a penetrator, you'd probably do better to stick with steel, because it's got a bit of density and the toughness to back it up.

I suspect any most rounds, particularly titanium ones, that penetrate plate steel will be too bent out of recognition to fly straight again anyway, so there may not be much point in catching it.

If you could get hold of tungsten, that's a different matter. Harder than just about anything else on the planet, save some tungsten compounds, silicon carbide and diamond/similar carbon structures, and about 2.5 times the density of steel (It's even 70% denser than lead) - That would be a good penetrator, and it would probably survive quite well.

1/4" steel plate on door hinges attached to a right-angle box so that when the projectile strikes it pushes the plate backwards and the projectile into the trap hey it works for my .223 rem. and i don't think that your projectile is more powerful then it

hm i may try a thin titanium one to get cost down to look how it does.

i don't have space to a that long tray.

the books should stop it gently tho but i need to change them every time since they will simply explode as they do with golf balls.

and if i really want to get some weight on the round i drill it out a bit and pour some lead in.

i think sand will destroy the penetrator, it will start to tear pieces of it..

Hardly. You can make a very good substitute from store-bought gelatin.
It might not be quite perfect in ballistic similarity to soft tissue to the fancy commercial brands, but it should be close enough.
