Not bad.

The fin vs. total penetration issue is something I've thought through myself - I've worked on an odd fin shape, designed to break off with minimal energy, but only under very specific forces felt by the dart during penetration.

thanks rag!

i think i just make it go through and get stuck in the plate in the first place, when i know i have enough energy to get through 1" of steel i will start to advance with break off fins.

in my case the fins did get welded on the wrong way. it was designed to have a more sleek profile through the air with long shallow fins.
i really think that was a bad description ^^

Okay, I feel stupid. What does APFSDS stand for? Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Dart System, right?

Check your math, I don't think the dart is going to go nearly Mach 2...

If true, that is pretty fast... that's around 21,700 Joules - almost exactly 16,000 ft-lbs.

That's the same sort of power as the .55 Boys cartridge, which was able to pierce 20mm armour at 100 yards.

I'm not good with GGDT, nor do I have it on this computer. But my common sense tells me it would be very unlikely for something to go Mach 2. Just my thoughts.

EDIT: Well, OK, I'll trust your math...just be VERY careful, you shouldn't really shoot at anything if what it said is true, the ricochet could kill you (as always)

if you guys don't belive me i take a screen shot from HGDT..

it can send 600g over the speed of sound if that is to any help..

ricochet will go in the ground since i bend the plate abit that way..

That of course implies that we trust HGDT. GGDT, I'd be reasonably confident about, as long as the muzzle velocity wasn't supersonic or transonic in the propellant gas, because there it's just fairly basic gas flow equations.

HGDT, I'm not so sure - you've got gas flow, heat loss, ignition points, flame front speed and all that to worry about, so I'd be more wary about trusting it's outputs.

No worries, I believe you. It's not a ridiculous cl- well, it's believable, anyway.

Kidding, though, I believe ya. I would like to see that supersonic 600g round, that sounds sweet :D

Oh yeah, clever idea with the bent plate, I should try that...
